Devil May Cry V Cover

“A game made for the Hot Topic kids of the 2000's"

HOW I PLAYED: I purchased this game on CDKEYS.com for steam. I played on my Alienware Aurora R12 with and i7 and 32GB RAM, and a RTX 3080.

STORY — 15/20

INTRO
I have never played any of the previous Devil May Cry games but this intro was to the point and serviceable. You face a boss that you have little to no chance of beating unless you are god tier at the game already. Get's you used to the game mechanics early on.

CUTSCENES
The cutscenes look amazing, this game is another Capcom RE engine game. All of the characters are campy and fun and have typical millennial deprecating humour.

WORLD BUILDING
There isn't much, there are items you pick up and NPC's you talk to who give additional world information. Most of the story is told through the cutscenes.

OVERALL STORY
The story is campy and doesn't take itself too seriously, I think it's meant to take a backseat to the some of the amazing metal OST tracks and super hype combat moments. The story is kinda bare minimum just an excuse for you to see all the fan favourites in the DMC series. But it works

GRAPHICS — 18/20

CHARACTER MODELS
This is another amazing example of how good the RE engine looks. All of the characters look incredible and are very stylish. The main cast of characters definitely got the most love, as the enemy NPC's are a tad generic.

ENVIRONMENTS
The environments look great, but there was nothing super exceptional for me. The final area maybe had the most "Wow" appeal. But the rest were pretty generic.

SPECIAL FX
All of the FX look great! Very satisfying, but nothing mind blowing.

ANIMATIONS
This game has amazing animations for all the in-depth combat and combos your characters can pull off.

AUDIO — 16/20

AMBIENCE
DMC V has a metal vibe which I am 100% bias towards. I love a lot of the ambient tracks, and they really brought out some bangers.

BOSS MUSIC
The boss music was decent, a tad bit generic. I was a little surprised that they kept all the S tier tracks for cutscenes mostly. The boss music was on the most part just "generic metal riffs".

SOUND DESIGN
This game is very action packed and the sound design follows suit, lots of great sword and fighting sound fx and mixing with the music and dialogue.

VARIETY
I felt the variety of music was decent, it wasn't all just metal riffs 100% of the time and there was some gothic elements thrown in from time to time.

GAMEPLAY — 29/40

CONTROLS
The controls in the game are actually quite complicated but simple at the same time. I mistakingly had my game set to "Auto Combo" for a large chunk of it, which almost ruined my playthrough. As soon as I turned that off I felt like the controls were 10000 x better. Even with my limited combo knowledge it was still a more enjoyable experience.

MECHANICS
You can totally make it through this game spamming one button or you can go super in depth and master some pretty insane combos that are incredible flashy.

PACING
I felt the pacing was pretty good, but this game does have a LOT of cutscenes that play almost every 5 minutes which I find very irritating.

UI/UE
I thought the UI was pretty clean for the most part but it is a bit cumbersome. The UE going through items and menu's could be refined a bit more as I did not find it too intuitive.

BOSS QUALITY
All of the bosses were great, none were super exceptional maybe other than the final boss. But I was happily surprised that I was not thrown a bunch of repeats or beefed up enemy mobs.

ENEMY VARIETY
This was a bit of a letdown for me, I found it weird that the game is supposed to be in this "Hell on Earth" type game, yet you fight a bunch of mantis like bugs? I thought the enemy designs could have been a lot better and more varied.

GAMEPLAY VARIETY
The game has a score system for style and use of different weapons and combos. I am personally not big into this but I know it's a trope for action games of the genre. There are also secret collectibles that you can find in each level. But I was more interested in just working through the main story then doing any of the side content or learning insane combos.

REPLAYABILITY
If you are the type of person who likes learning flashy combos and wants to replay bosses and levels to beat your previous high score, than there is a ton of replayability for you. But if you are not into that then this is a "One and done" type game. You can purchase the Vergil DLC to get him as a playable character, but he's SUPER OP and broken.

OVERALL — 78/100
GOOD
Devil May Cry V Review Overall Score

Devil May Cry V Is a fun and flashy action packed hack and slash game. A game made for the Hot Topic kids of the 2000's. It looks incredible in the RE engine and the characters are super cringe at times but have some campy charm to them. It plays great and is a good time to spend a weekend if you are looking for something to play in-between large campaign games.

TLDR: 78/100 GOOD Devil May Cry V is a fun and flashy action-packed hack and slash game perfect for the Hot Topic kids of the 2000s. The RE engine delivers stunning visuals, and while the characters can be cringy, they possess a campy charm. The gameplay is great, with intricate combat mechanics and satisfying animations, though the story is minimal and mainly serves as a backdrop for the action and metal OST. Ideal for a weekend playthrough between larger campaigns, it's enjoyable for those who appreciate stylish combos and replayability. Overall, it’s a visually impressive and entertaining experience.
