At Based Game Reviews, transparency and fairness are at the core of our review process. We believe every game deserves a thorough and balanced evaluation. Here’s how we break it down:
Gameplay Weighting
Gameplay is weighted highest at 40 because we believe it’s the most critical aspect of a video game. Even with strong graphics or story, poor gameplay prevents a game from being considered “good” or “great.”
Subsection Scoring (1-5 Scale)
Each subsection is scored on a scale of 1 to 5:
- 1 = Terrible: This represents a truly broken or under-performing subsection, setting the lowest quality standard within its genre or category.
- 2 = Mediocre: Below average, with noticeable flaws.
- 3 = Fair: Functional but unremarkable.
- 4 = Great: Stands out as a strong example of quality.
- 5 = Incredible: Represents industry-leading features or enhancements—elements that go beyond great and set a new standard. A subsection rated at this level exemplifies Game of the Year (GOTY) quality.
Accessibility / Bonus
Accessibility is important to us. We believe games should be inclusive, offering features like colorblind options, visual/audio cues, and adjustable difficulty for players with motor-function challenges. However, we understand smaller studios may face limitations, so accessibility is included as a bonus section worth up to 3 points. These are yes/no questions: either the feature is present, or it’s not.
