HOW I PLAYED: I purchased Metal Gear Rising on Steam and played on my Alienware Aurora R12 with an i7 and 32GB RAM and RTX 3080.

INTRO
This game has one of the most ridiculous yet awesome intro segments I have ever played. I was grinning from ear to ear and laughing at how brutal and savage the gameplay is. Really sets a great expectation of what you are going to be in for when you play this game.

CUTSCENES
The cutscenes are as over-the-top as the dialogue, filled with action-packed sequences that keep you entertained. The graphics of these scenes still hold up well and contribute to the game’s unique charm.

WORLD BUILDING
The world-building is serviceable, providing just enough context to keep the action moving. While not deeply immersive, it fits the game’s fast-paced, ridiculous tone.

OVERALL STORY
This game has dialogue that seems written by a 14-year-old. But it is hilarious and awesome and suits how ridiculous this game is. Not taking itself seriously and just super over the top. I was laughing through a lot of this game.

GRAPHICS — 17/20

CHARACTER MODELS
The character models are top-tier for the PS3/Xbox 360 era. Each character, especially the protagonist Raiden, is detailed and visually appealing.

ENVIRONMENTS
The environments, while graphically impressive, tend to feel repetitive. Many of the zones look similar, which detracts slightly from the overall visual variety.

SPECIAL FX
Special effects are spectacular, with flashy visuals that complement the high-energy combat. The effects add a lot to the overall excitement of the gameplay. They are BLOODY and EXPLOSIVE! And I love the destruction tech that they added into this game which was a big showcase on release.

ANIMATIONS
Animations are smooth and fluid, making the combat sequences particularly satisfying. Every slash and movement feels precise and well-executed.

AUDIO — 15/20

AMBIENCE
The ambient sound design is solid, contributing to the game’s atmosphere. It helps immerse you in the over-the-top world of Metal Gear Rising. Also anytime with a metal soundtrack is going to impress me and MGR Revengeance is no different.

BOSS MUSIC
The boss music is hilariously awesome metal, which suits the game’s intense battles. However, some tracks do repeat, and there could have been more epic moments.

SOUND DESIGN
The sound design is effective, with satisfying combat sounds and clear audio cues that enhance the gameplay experience.

VARIETY
The variety in the audio department is good but could use more diversity in music tracks to keep each encounter feeling fresh.

GAMEPLAY — 34/40

CONTROLS
The controls are tight and responsive, making the fast-paced combat feel fluid. The parry system, is cool but I didn't feel like it was as rewarding as it could be for achieving a parry. It was a lot easier to just spam the light attack button and you would usually win.

MECHANICS
The mechanics are fun and engaging, with the slicing system being a standout feature. It’s incredibly satisfying to cut through enemies with precision. This game does have QTE's but they use them in a way which is fun for the player. They don't just throw in a QTE for chopping down your dead wife's tree for no reason... 👀

PACING
The pacing is excellent, keeping you constantly engaged with intense action and minimal downtime. The game flows well from one encounter to the next.

UI/UE
The user interface is clean and functional, providing all the necessary information without cluttering the screen.

BOSS QUALITY
The bosses are unique and come with great cutscenes to start and end each fight. However, some boss fights have weird gimmicks that are not always clear, which can be frustrating. But I did have fun with most of the boss encounters, especially the over the top final boss.

ENEMY VARIETY
Enemy variety is lacking, with many encounters feeling similar. More diversity in enemy types would have added to the gameplay experience. But the game is so fast paced that you don't really mind.

GAMEPLAY VARIETY
You can choose to stealth your way through areas to avoid most combat scenarios or you can just SLAUGHTER EVERYTHING. The choice is yours, there are also hidden collectables that you can find throughout the levels if you are into that.

REPLAYABILITY
The game is fun enough to warrant multiple playthroughs, especially to master the combat mechanics. However, the lack of enemy variety and repetitive zones may affect replay value for some players.

OVERALL — 83/100
GREAT
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Review Overall Score

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an amazing game filled with hilariously ridiculous story elements that serve their purpose despite being complete trash. The combat is hella fun and satisfying, making it feel awesome to slash things into a million pieces. The game’s unique charm and over-the-top action make it a must-play for fans of the genre.

TLDR: 81/100 (GREAT) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance offers a hilarious and over-the-top experience with satisfying combat and a ridiculous story. Despite some dated mechanics and repetitive zones, it remains a fun and engaging game.
